Rationale for Read Across
America Internet Live Feed, March 2, 2010
Read
Across America is a day to celebrate reading. Our goal for this day was to
stimulate an interest in reading across all grades, encourage community
members to support our students by being a guest or a viewer of our
activities and to demonstrate the collaborative nature of education
throughout the metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona area.
We
wanted to expand our activities to include the community for this special
day. Students from our four schools participated in activities related to
reading all day on a live Internet website. Students were able to view the
video stream from their classrooms and parents and other relatives from
anywhere in the world were able to view the live broadcasts too.
We
created a common webpage that was accessible from all of our school
homepages. The special webpage had links to all participating schools, so
viewers could select the school they wanted to watch, and even view all the
schools if they wanted. The website had schedules for the day for the
schools. This allowed parents and other viewers to find the classes they
wanted to watch, and the broadcast time.
Overall the day was a great success, though somewhat limited due to bandwidth issues at two schools. These issues have been addressed and we look forward to uninterrupted broadcasts in 2011.
